Initial Value

Value is always a fun element of art to go over. You can do so much with it and turn it into an awesome piece that keeps your eyes moving for days. This project is exactly what that does. I had another teacher mention this to me as an into project to get the students to start shading and I thought I would use it for this Element. Turns out, it was a great idea and the students thought so too.

Using all of their initials, they created an abstract piece (hence the Initial Value name). Once they have their letters the way the like them, they add value to each section/quadrant of their letters.

Here are the steps I gave the students:

  1. Write your first letter of your first name. Then turn your paper counter-clockwise (left)

  2. Write your first letter of middle name. Then turn your paper counter-clockwise (left)

  3. Write your first letter of middle/last name. Then turn your paper counter-clockwise (left)

  4. Write your first letter of last name. Then turn your paper counter-clockwise (left)

Below are the student examples...
