This project turned out better than I expected.
I thought they were going to have issues with expanding out a painting. Deciding what the background should be, what they should include in the middle ground and what the foreground should consist of.
They started off with a list of artists from The Art of Ed website. I had them go through the list and mark off anyone they recognized. I wanted them to find an artist they had never heard of and explore their work.
Once they chose an artist, they had to complete a worksheet on their chosen artist and their piece they were going to expand out. (List of artists, Artists Worksheet)
