Typography Teaser

This lesson started out rough, I must say. They had no idea what a font or typestyle was… AACK!!

So, I started from the beginning. I introduced them to typography. We went over what the difference between typefaces and fonts. We talked about how typefaces are the ‘cool’ part of the alphabet and fonts are the computer files that house them. Once everyone understood, we were started our list making!

I presented a slide that had a few things they needed to answer.

Step 1: Choose one person for each item:

  • Actor

  • Artist

  • Composer

  • Musician

  • Scientist

*** These steps helped them narrow down what they would be creating in the end. ***

Step 2:

  • Choose your favorite person out of all you listed

Step 3:

  • Find a quote by your chosen person that inspires you

  • Rewrite the quote in a new way

  • Use at least 5 different fonts when you design the quote

Once they completed the first two steps, we headed over to the computer lab to look up quotes and typestyles to complete our assignment.

We used, dafont.com, 1001freefonts.com, fonts.com for guidance

I had a few guidelines they needed to adhere to, but they were free to complete the assignment with their own creative license.

Must Haves:

  • Use at least 5 different typestyles in your rewritten quote

  • Fill the page with a variety of typestyles. Be creative!

  • Start with pencil (very light) then move to markers or colored pencil

  • Fill the page (always use your space)

  • Have five or more styles

  • Can be in color or black and white

  • **No pencil should be seen on your final piece**
