Surrealism Portraits

Surrealism is one of my favorite art movements. It's crazy and intriguing and can sometimes be out of this world. So, I found this project on pinterest and thought I would give a try.

We found faces in magazines. This seemed to take the longest! Everyone had to find the PERFECT face!

Next I had them create a background where this person would be and incorporate patterns for emphasis. After their initial drawings were complete, each got a sharpie and outlined all pencil marks and erased any stray pencil that was left over.

Adding color was the final step. Each student received a pack of watercolor pencils to use. They had never used them before, so we got to do a little show and tell and figure out how to use them. A lot of them really liked the pencils better than the watercolor paint pallets.

Here are some before and after images I took.
